Probe questions fate of refugees in Thailand - CNN, 1/26/09

If it is true that the Thai military has been abandoning Burmese refugees at sea (essentially leaving them to die), I really don't see any immediate remedy to the situation. If the military has been handling the refugees, I'm sure the government has some idea of what's going on. It seems unlikely that the Thai government will reverse the policy (unless it gets much more negative press), and unfortunately, it doesn't seem that there are any countries nearby that would take in these refugees.

As a side note, this story was first reported by tourists. It's making me seriously rethink going to Bangkok and Phuket.
