A Conversation With Bill Gates - Interview with Nicholas Kristof, NYTimes, 1/25/09

In this interview, Kristof speaks with Gates about the increased need for aid in developing countries during a global economic downturn. Gates says that the global recession will have the greatest effect on the poorest individuals.

Gates goes on to say that we are on the verge of big scientific advances in malaria, diarrhea, and HIV prevention. He also believes that we will successfully develop several vaccines.

Kristof asks how ordinary people can make a difference, and I really liked Gates' answer. He recommends picking a cause -- perhaps even traveling to third-world countries or inner city areas to see the need that exists -- and then researching the problem and what can be done. As he suggests, you will probably be able to find an existing NGO that is addressing the cause you are interested in, and you can donate your time and money to this organization.

This is Kristof's related Op-Ed piece:
