According to CNN, Tsvangirai believes that the truck driver deliberately drove toward his car. CNN quotes Tom McDonald, a former ambassador to Zimbabwe, as saying, "I'm skeptical about any motor vehicle accident in Zimbabwe involving an opposition figure. President Mugabe has a history of strange car accidents when someone lo and behold dies -- it's sort of his M.O. of how they get rid of people they don't like." McDonald cites the car crash deaths of three men who opposed Mugabe (all within the last decade).

The New York Times reports that there is no evidence that the crash was more than an accident. Ironically, the truck was carrying life-extending HIV anti-retrovirals supplied by the US.
