Nathan Wolfe has spent the last decade searching the jungles of the Congo Basin and Southeast Asia for the next great pandemic. So why didn't his group (and other groups that are conducting viral surveillance projects) find H1N1? I guess they hadn't quite completed surveying bushmeat in Africa, or moved on to commercial farms, or even just the Western hemisphere ..

Trying to keep track of viruses in animals in both tropical jungles and commercial farms around the world is going to be a HUGE, but necessary, challenge.

Today, Wolfe argued that pandemic prevention is necessary. Here's a TED talk he gave in February.
